Sign our petition to ask the New Zealand Parliament to formally recognise the oppression of the Uyghurs of East Turkistan is genocide.

About our movement

The world is witness to the ongoing genocide of the Uyghur people.

The Uyghurs are a Muslim Turkic people belonging to the East Turkestan/Uyghur region ruled by China, otherwise known in Chinese as “Xinjiang” – “New Territory”.

The Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities in East Turkestan have long faced cultural repression and state violence, connected to the authorities’ fears of “separatism”, and Islamophobia.

This oppression has dramatically escalated since 2017, with the incarceration of well over a million Uyghurs in a massive network of concentration camps, prisons, and forced labour facilities. Uyghurs live in a state of terror, where all communications are monitored, and cultural expressions may be met with incarceration and worse. Severe and widespread human rights abuses have been documented, including torture, executions, sexual violence, the separation of children from parents, and forced sterilisations.

The Chinese authorities are working to destroy Uyghur life, at any cost. Numerous countries have declared that a genocide of the Uyghur people is taking place.

The situation remains as critical as ever, and it is our moral duty to stand up against these horrific injustices.

We aim to share awareness of the situation of the Uyghur people, to grow our movement, and to achieve concrete acts of solidarity in Aotearoa that will contribute to the growing international pressure on China to wind back and end these crimes against humanity.
